Research Participation Information

In partnership with the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), we are conducting research to better understand how people learn Japanese effectively through digital flashcards. By contributing your study statistics, you're helping advance research in language learning and app-based education.

🔍 What data is collected

If you choose to participate, the following anonymous data will be shared with our research partners:

1. The text on the frontside of each card (the Japanese word)
2. The marking you gave each card
3. The time you spent on each card
4. The date and time you marked each card

No personally identifying information is collected — no flashcard notes, no name, email, device ID, IP address, or account information is shared. The data cannot be used to identify any individual.

🧠 Purpose of the research

The collected data will be made available publicly to researchers, for anyone to use to help assess:

• The relative difficulty of vocabulary
• The effectiveness of various intervals of study
• Which study patterns lead to better retention
• How review timing and difficulty affect progress

The goal is to use these insights to make Nihongo's learning system more effective for everyone, and to contribute to academic understanding of second-language acquisition. By making the data publicly available, we enable the broader research community to contribute to advancing language learning science.

🔒 Privacy and data security

• All data is stored securely and transmitted in anonymized form.
• No personal or sensitive content is collected.
• The anonymized data will be made publicly available to researchers, but will never be sold or used for advertising purposes.

🙋 Participation

Participation is completely voluntary. You can opt in or out at any time in the app's settings. Choosing not to participate will not affect your use of the app in any way.
